Mary Jones, a math teacher at Southeast Bulloch Middle School, has been teaching math for 29 years.
Recently, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics invited her to join the U.S. Mathematics Delegation to Shanghai and Beijing, China.
Clean hotel conditions and food variety
She accepted the invitation and was the only teacher representing Georgia in the delegation of 17 states.
She left on November 13. She arrived in Beijing 25 hours later and began meeting with the Chinese Mathematical Society leadership at their hotel.
Mary Jones said the hotel staff was very friendly and clean, and there was a wide variety of food to choose from, including beef, seafood, and pork.
Discussions with Chinese teachers on a variety of topics
On the second day, they visited math classrooms from elementary to high school,
and Mary Jones said the students and Chinese teachers understood basic English and had no problem communicating.
The classroom discussions stayed on the topic of math, but there was also a lot of talk about math education, salaries, and social status.
